Most Indian plants already “do costing” in Excel. The file works until a polymer, API, or carton rate changes twice in one week, and three people quote from three copies. Product costing software is not a replacement for Tally. It is a Bill of Materials, rate cards, and a unit cost you can re-run before the dealer call.
KC Costing is built by KC Softwares in Nalagarh for pharma, FMCG, engineering, and packing units that live in spreadsheets but need one source of truth. We are the DigiTech-family software desk — not the closed French KC Softwares that sold SUMo.
What a honest cost sheet contains
- BOM master — components, multi-level where the product is an assembly
- Raw material rates — with wastage, not only the purchase invoice
- Labour — per operation or per unit, not a round number from last year
- Overhead — fixed and variable, allocated the same way every month
- Margin and break-even — selling price versus unit cost, before you lock a quote
- What-if — “if RM moves 8%, what happens to dealer margin?”
Excel import and export still matter. Finance will not abandon a sheet they already send to the CA. The software should accept that export and give a printable summary the director and the costing clerk both recognise.
When a spreadsheet is enough
If you make three SKUs and rates barely move, a locked workbook with one owner is fine. Software pays when SKUs multiply, night-shift labour differs from day, or packing materials change with every order. Same rule as custom vs ready-made: do not buy a full ERP to fix one cost sheet.
Plants in the Nalagarh–Baddi belt often start costing after payroll and crate stock. Attendance errors hit every employee; a wrong BOM quietly eats margin for months. Sequence still matters.
How we usually start
- Take your current BOM export (Excel is enough)
- Map RM, labour, and overhead the way your clerk already thinks
- Re-run one hero SKU until the number matches the sheet they trust
- Then load the rest of the catalogue
The clerk and the director should see the same unit cost. A “management dashboard” that disagrees with Excel is how the project dies in week two.
